Pawn is the alchemical salt symbol.
Esoterically, salt is one of the prime elements in alchemy, re-presenting (an/the) idea of matter, form, embodiment.
Rook is the alchemical sun symbol.
Knight is the Greek letter psi. A re-presentation of the psyche. Thus is this piece non-linear in its movement.
Queen is the alchemical symbol for sulfur inversed.
Bishop is the alchemical mercury. A re-presentation of (i) transformation (ii) the 'egoic self' aspect
King is the goat. A re-presentation of, the exoterically called, Satan and/or Baphomet; the Observer.
The alliances between the elements highlight (one of) their relationship(s) being high in the ARC triangle; having high affinity, reality and communication. Air being a re-presentation of the intellect, here seen on the upper (noumenal) board along with Fire, a re-presentation of the Pneuma or Will. On the lower (phenomenological or Causal) board, there is the element Earth, re-presenting the material and logistical along with the Water, re-presenting the Abstraction, emotion.
